¿Qué es una colonoscopia de cribado?
La colonoscopia es la prueba más sensible y precisa para detectar pequeños pólipos, llamados adenomas, que con el tiempo pueden convertirse en cáncer de colon.
¿Por qué todo el mundo debe hacerse una colonoscopia?
¡Se ha demostrado que la detección precoz y la extirpación de pólipos previene el cáncer colorrectal en más de un 90%!
¿Cuándo tengo que conseguir uno?
Para las personas sin factores de riesgo específicos, se recomiendan las colonoscopias a los 45 años. Se aconseja un cribado más precoz a las personas con síntomas como hemorragia rectal, o que tengan factores de riesgo concretos. Esto incluye a las personas con: antecedentes personales de pólipos adenomatosos, antecedentes familiares de pólipos de colon o cáncer de colon, o antecedentes familiares de otros cánceres, como el de mama, ovarios o útero. También incluye a las personas con antecedentes personales de enfermedad inflamatoria intestinal, como colitis ulcerosa o enfermedad de Crohn, u otras afecciones hereditarias poco frecuentes.
Prepararse para la colonoscopia NO es tan malo como dicen
Para prepararte para la colonoscopia, tienes que limpiarte el colon. Si tu colon no está vacío, no puedo hacer un examen tan meticuloso. La mayoría de la gente empieza la preparación al llegar a casa del trabajo, a última hora de la tarde o a primera hora de la noche, el día antes de la intervención.
Utilizamos uno de varios preparados. Algunos consisten en mezclar MiraLax en polvo (que no tiene sabor) con Gatorade; ¡sabrá a Gatorade! También sugiero beber mucho caldo de pollo claro, que también sabe bien. Todos los preparados implican beber una cantidad considerable de líquido durante unas 4 horas. A algunas personas les va mejor beber el preparado un poco más despacio. Ayuda mucho a mantener la calma.
¿Qué debo esperar el día de la intervención?
El procedimiento se realiza en mi consulta. A menos que seas la primera paciente del día, llama a mi consulta antes de salir de casa para comprobar que cumplimos el horario.
La enfermera te ingresará. Las mujeres en edad fértil deben darnos una muestra de orina. El anestesista te colocará una vía intravenosa en el brazo para administrarte la anestesia.
Estarás dormida mientras dure el procedimiento. Durante la colonoscopia, generalmente extirparé los pólipos y tomaré biopsias de las zonas anormales.
La exploración en sí dura unos 30-40 minutos. Es un poco más larga que la media, porque me parece muy importante dedicar más tiempo a realizar un examen lo más meticuloso y completo posible.
Después de la intervención, te controlaremos durante unos 15 minutos en la sala de recuperación. Deberías poder trabajar al día siguiente.
Debes prever que pasarás un total de 1-1/4 horas desde el momento de tu ingreso.
Importante: Debes hacer que alguien te recoja. No podrás conducir durante el resto del día.
